- Planning a child or worried about job loss?
Unemployment benefit and parental allowance are based on net pay, so the class matters. The partner who will take parental leave gains from class III, but the change must be in place for most of the 12 months before the birth: in practice about 7 months before maternity protection starts. Unemployment benefit uses the class held on 1 January.
Tax class pairs compared
The class pair only decides how much is withheld each month. The final tax for the year is the same: €11,154. Pick the pair you have or plan.

Who carries what
A joint return has one tax bill. We split it the way the tax office does when asked (§ 270 AO): in the ratio of the taxes each of you would pay alone. Partner A carries 81 %, Partner B 19 %.

Benefits by tax class (estimate)
Unemployment benefit and parental allowance follow net pay, so the class changes them. Rough monthly amounts from the average regular salary:
| Per month | Class III | Class IV | Class V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partner A: unemployment benefit | €2,154 | €1,924 | €1,624 |
| Partner A: parental allowance | €1,800 | €1,800 | €1,674 |
| Partner B: unemployment benefit | €1,200 | €1,085 | €917 |
| Partner B: parental allowance | €1,231 | €1,107 | €924 |
Unemployment benefit: 60 % of a flat net pay, using the class held on 1 January. Parental allowance: 65–100 % of a flat net, €300–€1,800, using the class held for most of the 12 months before the birth.
What if the salary changes?
Partner B's monthly gross from €0 to €5,000, with Partner A's pay and everything else as entered. Between €604 and about €825 a month, Partner B earns more but the family keeps less than with a €603 minijob.
